How to Balance Working at Home and Raising Your Kids
When you have a home based type of small medium business, your kids are exposed to the nature of your work. You would have to make a point to separate your work and your family life. There has to be a balance between the two separate entities.
Because you choose to have your business at home, you have the advantage of controlling your time, your work load and your work space. Plus you can work at the comfort of your home where no employer would boss you around. Because you are the boss!
Many small medium businesses in the U.S. install their business in their homes to monitor their household, most especially when they have little kids to look out for during the day. Why pay for baby sitting when you can bring your work at home. And you won’t be far from your kids as well.
I have a friend who has a left the corporate world to be around her two children. And she and her husband put up a small medium business of their own. It was hard work at first but after a while, they were getting a lot of orders, making some money. One time during Christmas, it was the peak season and she had a lot of orders for gift baskets. It was hard work, and stress was running high. The deadline was approaching, and they had no time to stop to even straighten the room.
There were boxes with product everywhere, there were empty boxes, and there was gourmet food everywhere: a true disaster area! And just then, her 4 year old daughter (now 11) came to her with her big brown eyes in tears: saying, “Mommy, I am bored and I am lonely… Can we play a little?” What could she do? She was alone at home with her, and if she stopped to play, there was no way she could finish the order in time.
So, she thought quickly of how she could play with her and work at the same time. And she came up with the idea of building her little one with an office right next to hers out of used damages boxes. Her 4 yr old was ecstatic! And she did all the work! She told her where to go and get the boxes, and made room for her by her desk. She built a desk, improvised a chair, and even had items to sell in her store.
With that in place, she was able to continue her work uninterrupted most of the time. Because her daughter was able to keep herself busy by her. Plus her daughter learned many things from their so-called play time. She learned about maintaining and ordering inventory. She learned about phone etiquette. She learned addition and subtraction.
You can both teach your kid business basics while having fun and work at the same time. Make the time and think how your situation can be used to plant business seeds in your child.
