Successful small to medium businesses all over the world have some important things in common; strong finances, captured clientele, and an excellent team.
Having an outstanding squad in a business is essential for its success. The line up consists of the executives, the middle level employees, and everybody else down the line. For a business owner, it is important to note that not all of these people work in the same manner and with the same motives. This key idea might actually give small to medium businesses the edge in survival.
“I am pure talent!”
These are the people whose mindsets we can label “fixed.” They believe that they are the best at what they do so they are more confident, and more willing to take responsibility. They are determined and always strive hard to achieve their goals in the best possible manner.
However, the trouble with a person with a fixed mindset is that they may find it harder to work with a team. Sometimes, they try to outshine others in the group because they believe they are better than the rest. Since they know their capabilities, they do not want to work with others who might not be in the same level as they are. They are afraid to make mistakes and their worst fear is to fall from the good graces of their superiors. They are prone to wallowing in depression if they encounter failures.
“I can be better at this!”
These are the people whose mindsets we can label as “growth.” Their principle in life is that their abilities can grow over time and with experience. Unlike the fixed-mind set people, the growth mind set people do not consider failures as total setbacks. Instead, they persevere to utilize the lessons from these failures as stepping stones for future successes.
You might ask, in a small to medium business endeavor, would it be better to get one group instead of the other? If so, which one?
The easy answer of course, is to get those that have a growth mind set. A small medium business owner can be assured of a positive outlook in his team and this is essential to pull the business toward triumph. The best and the brightest graduates from top universities may not be the best people to hire. It might work better if a business owner recruits people who still have the capacity to be an apprentice.
But then again, success will still not come to a small or medium business that only has positively and thirst for learning in its list of advantages, success also requires natural talent.
The best answer therefore, is to get people who are both innately talented and has a growth mind set. This way, a small to medium business owner can be assured of a team that is confident to face challenges yet are resilient enough to accept disappointments. A mixture of talent and resiliency is optimal as it produces a crew that has a passion for learning new things, the flexibility to turn drawbacks into improvements, and the drive to win.
